Compared to his prodigious output of posters, Colin’s paintings are extremely rare, yet he obviously had a firm grasp of the technical side of it. Suzy Solidor (1906-1983) was born Suzanne Rocher; it was not until she began singing at the L’Européen music hall in 1934 that she adopted her stage name. She was blonde, tall, and athletic and sang with a deep voice, mostly about sailors and the sea. She was featured in all the big music halls and cabarets for 30 years. In addition to her stage appearances, she was a radio, recording, and film star as well. And she is particularly remembered for entertaining Parisians tirelessly in the dark days of German occupation during World War II. At the height of her career, she commissioned her portrait from leading artists such as van Dongen, Derain, Kisling, and two from Colin.
