“Jean Borlin was a principal dancer of the Royal Swedish Ballet when Rolf de Maré brought him to Paris in in 1920 as first dancer and choreographer of the Ballets Suédois at the Théâtre de Champs-Élysées... According to Colin, de Maré ‘was very rich’ and he had brought the Swedish Ballet to Paris ‘especially to show his young lover, Jean Borlin.’ When Borlin died prematurely in New York on December 6, 1930 (he was buried in Paris a month later) at age 37, a stricken de Maré founded Les Archives Internationales de Danse, in his memory. This is another fine poster design for yet another dancer. Colin had an affinity for them... some of his best posters were, in fact, created for dancers... In the case of Borlin, Colin’s poster went with him to Brazil, the United States, and other countries to announce the appearance of this avant-garde dancer” (Colin, p. 8).
