In a very simple and direct way, Colin captures the characteristic slouch and somewhat dejected mien of this French chanteuse, who toward the end of her life struggled with alcoholism. As a young dancer, Marguerite Boulch had been Maurice Chevalier’s partner both on and off stage. When she was replaced in both senses by Mistinguett, she went crazy and threatened to kill him. Afterwards, she switched from dancing to singing, adopting the stage name Fréhel.
