This poster is dedicated to the French troops that “sacrificed themselves for liberty” at Dien Bien Phu, the former French military base near the Laos border. Desperate pleas for United States intervention were unsuccessful and the fortress fell to North Vietnamese forces on May 7, 1954, after a fifty-six day siege—the Alamo of France’s Vietnam war—signaling the end of French colonial power in Indochina. The soldier, as close to being crucified as Colin could dare without blaspheming, bleeds red, white, and blue.
