This league was created in 1921 by combining two preexisting groups: the Ligue Coloniale, created in the 19th century, which promoted the expansion of French colonization; and the Ligue Maritime, created in 1899 after the military defeat of Fachoda, which combined the military navy and the commercial navy. Both were influential groups equivalent to today’s lobbies. They merged in 1921 and became immediately popular and powerful, and contributed to the expansion of France, especially in Africa, where there were already several colonies. Colin shows a white arm and a black arm shaking, but history tells us that this was likely not a friendly agreement.
