“Before the war, in 1938, Colin created a well-known poster for the ‘Emprunt de la Défense Nationale’ (National Defense Loan) which showed France, made of wheat and with factories behind her, holding the nation’s shield and urging Frenchmen ‘Souscrivez pour sauver la Paix et vos Libertés’ (Subscribe in order to save the Country and your Freedoms). Now, in 1945, Frenchmen, in another Colin poster, are being urge to subscribe to the ‘Emprunt de la Libération’ (The Liberation Loan). Charles de Gaulle’s provisional government launched a great national loan drive to help with the reconstruction effort. Marianne, the Republic’s symbol, brandishing the French flag after having broken her chains, leads the effort to financially rescue the state” (Colin, p. 10).
