The play Rapide de Minuit was common melodramatic fare for the Ambigu Theatre, which specialized in keeping audiences on the edges of their seats. Here, Colin frenetically displays the horrifying climax of the play, when the foreman of a jury condemns a young woman to the electric chair for murder. The verdict runs against public sentiment; friends and even his own family turn against him, until he has to prove to his own satisfaction that the woman was indeed guilty. Nearly a decade later, the play would be made into the film “Midnight” (later titled “Call It Murder”) starring Humphrey Bogart.
