“For the play Montmartre by Pierre Frondaie, Colin evokes the spirit of that quarter, so dear to the poets, artists, and posterists of the time. Frondaie, a novelist of little note, was skilled at adapting famous novels to the stage: Pierre Louys’ ‘Aphrodite,’ Anatole France’s ‘Sylvestre Bonnard,’ Claude Farrere’s ‘La Bataille,’ owe their stage success to him. The Théâtre Pigalle was built in 1929 by the Rothschild banking family but was demolished about 30 years later; it had not been one of their profitable ventures” (Colin, p. 10).
