“Balls involved not only students and artists, but professional groups as well. In this charity ball, to raise money for widows and orphans of doctors, Colin used an obviously appealing symbol, the child, eyes open and hands outstretched. The silhouette with a pointed hat is reminiscent of the doctors in Molière’s plays, but it’s obvious that the dancing, in the background, is quite contemporary. Although Colin, as seen, will use shadows and details in the background of his compositions, he is always certain to use a strong, central motif to catch the eye. Commenting on this poster, he states, ‘You must create an atmosphere, but you must also catch the eye with something. See the child’s eyes... even if you were driving by in a hurry, you would notice this child. And the hat'” (Colin, p. 9).
