“During the 1930s Colin did a great deal of the advertising art for the Théâtre de l’Apollo, then situated next to the Casino de Paris, and his prodigious output for it included dozens of programs and posters. It was in this huge and attractive house that operettas and big spectacles (such as Mary Dugan’s Trial) were staged... The drama for which Colin provides this 3-color poster, Matricule 33, belonged to a genre that was fashionable at the time: the detective play. Again, the element of suspense, the impending danger, is expressed by means of piercing eyes emoting from a human void, and heightened here by the open door. You can hear it squeak.
