Théâtre St. Georges / Les Mangeurs d'Hommes
Théâtre St. Georges / Les Mangeurs d'Hommes
The play was based on a novel by Pérye published in 1928, named Ong Côp, mangeur d'hommes (Ong Côp, Man Eater). The author was not widely known, but specialized in stories about the colonies and tropical islands. We can presume that this play was set in Vietnam. The Théâtre St. Georges was founded in 1929 by Camille Choisy, who was also the director of this play. In fact, this play was maybe the second performed in this new theatre, which specialized in dark, dramatic, and macabre plays. This is not a surprise because at the same time (between 1914-1930) Choisy was also the director of the Théâtre du Grand Guignol, as mentioned in the poster. A well known theatre in Paris since the middle of the 19th century, they specialized in scary, bloody, pornographic, and scandalous plays.
