For an artist given to calling upon multifaceted portraiture to express the inner workings of his subjects, Colin shows amazing restraint—to reflective, soulful ends—in this poster for the French film, “Diary of a Country Priest.” Based on the 1936 novel by Georges Bernanos about a clergyman’s spiritual development in a small community, it initially seems like an odd choice for screen adaptation as all of the soul-wrenching conflicts take place in the protagonist’s mind. But in the hands of French New Wave pioneer Robert Bresson, the intellectual subject was tackled with admirable skill, becoming a classic in the process. Framing the story with the priest actually writing a diary and recounting events with a gentle voice-over, Bresson proved that inner turmoil can be projected with good use of film narrative, solid low-key acting, and deft editing. The priest is faced with many frustrations, disappointments, despair, temptations, and illness, and eventually dies in great pain from stomach cancer while murmuring, “All is grace.” The final diary entry is then written by someone else about his death.
