Before switching to film in the early 1950s, Españita Cortez was known as an interpreter of regional Spanish dances at the Opéra Comique.”This is a most interesting poster for her by Colin, who indicates that he had a special fondness for her: ‘She was once my mistress—she was a little dancer—she danced Spanish dances but she wasn’t really Spanish.’ Colin has certainly drawn her ‘little’ in this poster, her small form floating and almost lost in the larger color backdrop. It’s also one of the few Colin posters in which the lettering is essentially hand-drawn as opposed to machine-composed” (Colin, p. 11).
