This simple but elegant botanical design is a poignant encapsulation of the Art Nouveau movement: it announces an exhibition at Samuel Bing's Paris gallery, L'Art Nouveau, which opened in 1895. This gallery was the preeminent influence on the artistic movement that came to define the turn of the century. Vallotton studied at the Académie Julien and began working in woodblock prints and painting. He went on to become a notable part of the Parisian poster scene and worked frequently with Bing; he also collaborated with Henri Ibels, Pierre Bonnard, and Toulouse-Lautrec on a set of stained glass windows for Tiffany's.
