Rockwell pays homage to good ol' American values in this image of a Boy Scout standing in the shadow of George Washington 200 years after his birth. The Boy Scouts were very meaningful to Rockwell; they often appeared in his illustrations as symbols of American benevolency and dedication. But the artist's career was also launched with Boy's Life magazine—the official publication of the Boy Scouts—where Rockwell got his first illustration work in 1912 at the age of 18. And even after he became a major freelance artist, he continued to produce annual calendars for the organization from 1926 to 1974.
