Casimir stands for everyman, an average, simple soul; the implication is that ordinary people derive a great deal of satisfaction from smoking the advertised product. A native of Zurich, Laubi studied extensively in Paris and London, but came back home in 1918 to accept the post of art director at the printing firm of the Brothers Fretz. Since he also did illustrations for periodicals, many of his posters come close to cartoon style, of which this is a conspicuous, rarely seen example.
