L'Éléphant Savant

estimate: $4,000–5,000
This rare woodblock engraved poster announces the gift of the exceptional elephant Baba to King Louis XVIII. The magnificent creature was found in Ceylon and raised and trained by Mr. Padovani, provider of the menagerie to King Louis XVI. The text tells us that he has the capacity to uncork a bottle and drink its contents (such as wine, brandy, and rum); he can fire a pistol shot with his trunk; he plays the organ "with as much skill as a person."
