She’s so winsome, and the apéritif made from aged burgundy is so delicious, that a bust of Bacchus himself comes alive to drink it down. Another testament to the tipple’s excellence is its medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair. The poster is unsigned, but the 1896 Reims catalog as well as Maindron both clearly indicate that the image is Choubrac’s work. It’s done in the slightly caricaturistic style he developed at the beginning of his career when he worked for several journals. A year after creating his first image for the brand (see PAI-LXXXVII, 264), Choubrac produced this image: the largest billboard to date in eight sheets, again featuring the figure of Bacchus, but this time surrounded by frolicking villagers. This is the only known copy of that image.
