John Holtum (1845-1919) was a famous strongman/juggler who for many years did a cannonball act. Chéret executed a number of posters for the appearances of this daredevil, including this unsigned promotion that puts Holtum less than a second away from being on the receiving end of a cannon blast. You've really got to hand it to Holtum: though this looks like an act of pure insanity, he obviously knew what he was doing, seeing as he lived to the age of seventy-four.
