"Leydenfrost, a New York artist who was accomplished in magazine illustration and large murals, produced [this] scene. For the first time since the 1941 calendar painting appeared, a passenger train was featured, hauled by a streamlined steam locomotive. Logically as well as compositionally, all the elements of the painting work together: coal in the hopper cars at left feeds the mill; the cars waiting in the freight yard at right are filled with machinery and structural steel, the products of the factories whose smokestacks rise beyond. The railroad is the partner of big industry" (Crossroads, p. 118).
