Using powerful modelling in bright shades of red and blue, the artist depicts the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II, who reigned from 1279-1213 BC. He is considered one of the most powerful and most celebrated leaders of the New Kingdom. His mummy was discovered in 1881 and in 1975 it was brought to France with much fanfare for restorative treatment. Today, he rests in the Cairo National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.
