Lottery of the Union of Southwestern Moravia
Lottery of the Union of Southwestern Moravia
“A forlorn school girl and the weeping figure of Slavia, symbolizing the mother country, make a heart-rending appeal to the public to buy lottery tickets to support a local school system. One of the major grievances the Slav minorities had under the Austrian regime was the ruthless pressure of the authorities to eradicate the local language and culture. The state provided schools in German only; if the population wanted to have their children taught in their own language, they had to build and run the schools themselves. This lottery was one of the means to obtain such funds” (Rennert/Weill, p. 342). The image offered here is the central part of the final poster with text.
