The Jockey Takes the Roses : Painting
watercolor and ink on paper 10½ h × 9 w in (27 × 23 cm)
"In 1963, Tomi's friend and art director of Sports Illustrated, Richard Gangel, asked Tomi to go to the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, and make some sketches of the race and the activities in and around the track. Tomi filled a sketchbook of his impressions that day... If these quick sketches, done in watercolor and pencil, appear at first different from his general poster art, they nonetheless have one of the same basic and important ingredients: they remove all pretense and tell it like it is" (Ungerer Posters, p. 82). This is one of those hand-signed watercolor paintings.
Signed to lower left edge 'Tomi Ungerer'.
