Sleighing in New York / Barnum’s Museum
lithograph on paper sight: 21⅜ h × 30¼ w in (54 × 77 cm)
This exceedingly rare and early work showcases the tremendous skill of American lithography through the infinite detail in this magnificent print. Harry T. Peters, in his monumental work "America on Stone" indicates this image’s value and rarity: "’Sleighing in New York’... is the only work from the hands of [Nagel & Lewis] that I have seen. It is justly celebrated, and well worthy of reproduction” (p. 93). In the background of this bustling winter scene, one sees Barnum’s American Museum, once located at the corner of Broadway and Ann Street in Manhattan. Owned by P.T. Barnum, it celebrated oddities from around the world before the famous showman segued into the circus business. It burned down on July 13, 1865.
